  1. I was really excited about the idea of this book; I love disaster stories! I like to see how different people deal with the situation. This book described the disaster from the main character's point of view, which is fine, but I think it would have been a more interesting book if it had been written from many points of view.

Personally I love this book. Some people may believe its boring, but I think it's filled with plenty of description and action. I like this book so much I think because it could really happen someday and everything in the book is possible. Also I like it because the main character, Miranda, is about the same age as I am so I can relate to all of her drama because I've got some of the same problems as her like fighting with friends and parents. So far in the book nothing has gone right for this family, at least nothing very important. Hopefully, at least towards the end, things start looking good and all of Miranda's family can survive this terrible disaster.

This book is a really great way for people to see that things come unecspectantly and you need to be prepared. To this day people are talking about how they should be getting prepared for the end (2012) and yet others chose to have disbelief like in the book when people dont think anythings going to happen after the comet hit the moon obviously if you knew anything aboutr earths gravitational pull or the atmosphere you would be able to know that something catastrphic is about to HAPPEN FROM THE IMPACT that will affect the human race as well as our MOTHER EARTH.

hello again sorry to ramble again but i was just hopeing that this book has affected you as much as myself. I am a pretty down to Earth kind of a person meaning i already knew about a lot of things like this and how they would affect the earth it it really did ever occur. Even though this book is fiction that doesnt mean you cant learn the lesson told and thats for one family comes first, second it's thta no matter what you do do what makes YOU happy you only have one life and you better live it long and regretless.
YES this book was perfect for winning the choice for a Gateway bookaward. bc its very inspirational to young adults to live thier lives.

this story takes place in the main characters home and school.
she was home one evening and she gets the news that she is going to have a new baby sister.
but she doesnt seem very excited so she just knows that she has to atleast pretend that she is so she doesnt make her and her dad upset.
the setting is important because that is where most of the stuff in the story is going to take place like the main plots of the story may take place here.
the main characters are miranda (the main character)her mom dad and Lisa (her dads wife which is the one having a baby.

  8. The Main Character in "Life as we knew it" is Miranda. She is a 16 year old who has 2 brothers. Matt the older brother is in college studying for finals. Johnny is the younger brother who focused on baseball. Miranda liked to skate but when she broke her ankle, she quit. Then there are her 3 best friends. Meghan, a girl who has overly religious parents, Sammy, the girl who has a new boyfriend every week, and becky who deathly ill in the hospital. So one night miranda is watching the news when she sees the an asteriod is going to hit the moon. They say nothing serious is going to happen. They get an unexpected call from matt. He says that he was calling to just say hello but after he is done talking to johnny and mirandas mom, miranda asks if something is wrong. Matt is the person who is usually right about everything and he thinks that when the asteriod hits the moon it will start something bad.

The main character in "Life as we knew it" is Miranda. She is 16 years old and likes to ice skate but she cant now because she broke her ankle. She has 2 older brothers named Matt and Johnny. Matt is the older of the two and is in collage and Johnny is the younger one and likes to play baseball. Miranda has 3 best friends. Their names are Miranda, Meghan, and Sammy. One night Miranda is watching the news and a story comes on about an asteroid is going to hit the moon but, the scientists think nothing bad or serious will happen. On the night the asteroid hits the moon, everyone is outside watching it. After it hits the moon, everyone finds out that all electricity is gone.

This book takes place in many different places: outside the house, in the house, and school. Manly outside when the asteroid hits
the moon. It was on a Wednesday night and everyone was standing outside watching it. Miranda is one of the main character.
She is a 16 year old girl and loves to skate. Her parents are divorced and her dad is remarried to a girl named Lisa.
Miranda and Lisa don't really get along. Miranda has two brothers, one is older and in college(Matt) and the other one is younger
and plays baseball(Johnny). She has two best friends, Megan and Sammi.

The book "Life as we know it" mostly takes place in Miranda's house. She is 16 years old and she is about to be a godmother of her first born child. She has 3 best friends: Mehgan, a very relgious girl, Sammy, a girl that has new boyfriends every week, and finally becky, who has delivered a death. On May 7th, Miranda watches a news and founds out that there will be an asteroid that will be impacted along the moon. She founded this interesting but also little afraid. But the news said there is nothing to worry about.

I agree with you that the story being divided into chapters makes the book a little bit confusing. Also I don’t get how the mother could send her child to a camp after an incredible scary accident. I think it was to make the world seem okay or normal to him.

I understand how Miranda's mom could send Johnny to a camp. She is trying to make his outlook on this situation better. Miranda's brother does not fully understand the situation and what has happened, as the others have, so she is trying to protect him. I disagree with the chapters being confusing, I believe it divides the story and makes it easier to understand.

The main characters in "Life as We Knew It" are Miranda,Sammy,Meghan, and Miranda's family members. Miranda is 16yr old girl that loves to skate and is on the swim team. Meghan one of Miranda's main friends, is a religious church going girl that loves to focus on God. Sammy is a flirt and has a new boyfriend every other day. The main settings of this book so far have been at home and school. These two settings are were the most drama is taking place, thats why they are important to this novel.

So far in the book "life as we knew it" I have been introduced to many characters. Miranda, her friends Meaghen and Sammy, Miranda's mom and dad, and also Miranda's dads wife Lisa who is pregnant. Lisa also asked Miranda to be godmother of her child. Miranda's dad is super excited about having another child because he said the first daughter turned out so well. Miranda and her friends have been fighting alot lately. Meighen has been totally into going to church and just being at anything church related. Sammy on the over hand has a boyfriend almost every other day. Miranda says that they have changed so much but she hasnt. Miranda also has two brothers, matt and johnny. Matt is older and us in college. Miranda says that she can always count on matt for advice and someone to talk to. Johnny is her younger brother who plays baseball.

The setting so far in this book takes place at Miranda's home and at her high school.the setting is important because it is most likely where most events in the story will take place, and you know where and what people are doing in the story. The main characters in the story are Miranda,Sammy,Megan, and Lisa.Miranda seems like she is just an average teenager with a normal life. Sammy is the type of girl who has a new boyfriend all the time. Megan is a good kid who hangs out with her church group all of the time. Lisa, Miranda's mom is like any ordinary mom and cares for her children like any other mom would if an asteroid hit the moon and things were going crazy.

I agree that the I ever setting will be important because that can affect how they survive later on. However I think that Lisa is handling the situation better than most moms would have. I think most moms would not be as calm or as prepared as Lisa. I think they would just tell their kids everything is okay instead of being blunt and up front about it.

I also agree that the setting is important to their survival and how they deal with the situation. But Miranda's mom is not named Lisa. Lisa is Miranda's dad's girlfriend's name, not Miranda's mother. But I would say that Miranda's mom has handled the situation well and although she is scared she has made everyone believe she is in control

This book has a lot of different settings. It has Miranda's house, her school, outside her house when the asteroid hits the moon, and at the grocery store. I'm just going to talk about the grocery store because it was my favorite part. Miranda's mother picks her up from school and drives her, her brother, and her mom's friend to the grocery store in the pouring rain. Miranda's mother explains to her that they need to get all the food they can find. The power is out in the store so each cart is $100. The grocery store is a mad house. Everyone is trying to fill their carts with the things they need. People are fighting and pushing and shoving. It is basically an all out war. Miranda and her family find what they need and fill the trunk of their car. The setting is important because the reader needs to know what the characters are doing and where they are when they are doing it. Miranda is a 16 year old girl. She lives in a house with the other two main characters, her mother and her brother(Johnny) but she also has an older brother named Matt. Miranda has two best friends. (Meghan and Sammy)Meghan is a church girl and is always with her church friends and Sammy is obsessed with boys. Sammy has a new boy all the time so Miranda hasn't really talked to her best friends in a while.

This book is very intense and crazy. I like how Meghan described the grocery scene. That is by far my favorite part in the book so far. I can imagine that happening. Everyone just going crazy and not caring for anyone else as long as they get what they want. I can already tell that something bad is going to happen and I am really excited to keep reading.

I agree with the book being chaotic and all. Miranda's mom seems like she is more than prepared if anything happens. Like Jonathan said everyone just going crazy and not caring for no one as long as they get what they want".I think that is exactly what would happen if that was a real life situation. I wonder what disasters Miranda and her family will face themselves. I think that the brother coming home is going to get into trouble and not be able to make it home. This is a really good book so far.

The setting in "Life As We Knew it" is in Miranda's town in Pennsylvania. The main character is Miranda, her brother Johnny and her mom. The setting of Pennsylvania might be important to the novel because of the moon being moved where they live could affect how they have to survive. If they lived closer to the shoreline then they could have drowned. Miranda is smart and doesn't like to take sides, as shown when both her friends fight at school. Miranda also thinks outside of the box. Such as when she buys the oil lamps at the antique store. Miranda's mom likes to be prepared, as shown when she decides to stock up on food even though everyone says everything will be fine. Johnny seems to like baseball a lot because he is always asking about the baseball teams and what happened to them.

The setting for the book "Life as We Knew It" is in the main character, Miranda,'s hometown in Pennsylvania. The setting might be important because as the oceans rise and tides are messed up, due to a collision between the moon and an asteroid, they live far away from shores and would be safe from flooding. The main characters so far are Miranda, her mom, and her brother Johnny. Other characters are the preachy church girl Meghan and Sammy who has a new boyfriend every week. Miranda is a good leader and takes charge in stressful situations, while her mom is very cautious and wants to be prepared for disaster, and her brother is interested in baseball even in times of trouble

I agree with ms. Angie gunnel that it should be written from many point of views. Being written from many point of views would be able to show how other people reacted from different point of views. It would show their feelings toward the fact that they might get injured in the situation

I agree with Ms. Angie Gunnel that it should be written from different points of views. Then we would have a much bigger picture of what everyone is going through. A internal conflict that Miranda is struggling with is she wants life to return to normal and everything to be fixed. She is unhappy with how everything is and frustrated about how her entire world was destroyed by the asteroid's impact with the moon. I predict that this conflict will be resolved when the world gets back to semi-normal, and Miranda's life can resume to what it was before the collision. The author has created a sad and depressing mood with all the events that have happened and the reaction to them by each of the characters.

In the book life as we knew it I believe that the main character Miranda’s biggest conflict is with her mom. At first Miranda’s mom tried to make the world seem normal to Miranda and her brother, but after the panic, when everyone bought as much as they could, Miranda’s mom started to restrict what she could do. For instance her mom tried to stop her from going to the pond because she was scared of the West Nile Virus. Also her mom was mad that Miranda went to get Dan so that he could get some of the food that was being handed out.

Theres not much to do since its always dark outside and none of her friends really go to school.I think the conflict will be resolved when everything with the moon gets figured out and everything settles down, but no one knows when thats going to be. In life as we know it Miranda is struggling with a big conflict in this book. Her conflict is that her life is changing in negative ways. Ever since the moon was hit by the asteroid, her life has changed. She no longer goes to school and she hardly has electricity which you need. The author has created a not happy but not unhappy mood. It is leaning towards unhappy because most of the things happening have been negative. The only good thing so far is Matt being able to make it home safely. Other than that it is a pretty calm mood in the book.

In the book Life as We Knew it, Miranda is the one that has the main conflict. Just like everyone else in the world, she just wants everything to get back to normal. When the moon was hit by the mediator, her life has fallen apart. Her mom has change dramatically. She is restricting the things Miranda can and cant do. The only way Miranda will get her normal life back is either her mom calms down a lot or by the moon getting back to its original place in space and everything on Earth gets back to normal. The mood int the story so far is very depressing, sad, and very gloomy.

Also school wasn't going great because of the assembly the school had in which turned into a riot. But the mood of through story is happy and sad. And she freaked what was happening around the state. There family started to freak out and they needed to buy some supplies for there survival. They went to dozens of food marts for over hundreds dollars of food and more if the world ends. Although they were glad that everyone was safe after buying all those foods and clothing. However, Miranda tried to contact with his brother and father but could not reach them. So she did not get to meet her dad nor his brother, which is pretty sad. In this book, the main conflict is the moon being hit by the meteor. The moon was tilted off it's axis and created major problems in Miranda's world. Miranda's mother and family are all going a little crazy because no one really knows whats going to happen. School was cancelled. It was summer and the power was out most of the time. Miranda just keeps hearing bad news, her older brother Matt lets her know how he and his mother don't think things are going to get better for awhile. Miranda finds out that her mother is worried about how much food they will have left. This story has many conflicts and I'm sure there will be more to come.

The main external conflict is that the moon has been hit by an asteroid. I think that it will take a long time to resolve this problem. i disagree with jarrett.the internal conflict is inside Miranda's house like family difficulties, no power and low food supply. The external conflict is all of the things happening in the outside world like tsunamis, and all of the other things happening around the world, not starting to run low on food

I agree with Devin about the internal and external conflicts. The internal conflict is the family arguments, lack of food and the power not being very reliable. The external conflict is like Devin said, the rest of the world suffering with natural disasters and and the running low on food and other supplies.

I disagree with Elijah. i do think that life will go back to normal. i do not think everyone is going to die. i think that they are just trying to show us what the world would be like if the a mediator hit the moon, and how life would change. I think that the author is trying to make us relize that we should be greatful for what we have and not take anything for granted, because one day your normal life could totaly change.

i agree with Ke'Dar that there is an external and internal conflict. the enviroment is going crazy an life is changing in so many ways. i think the conflict with miranda and her mother is starting to be resolved. they are getting along very well and her mother has losened the strings for what miranda can do.

I disagree with Elijah that everybody is going to die in the end. I believe that there has to be some solution to this major problem. Things cannot stay this way forever. I believe that at the end of the novel that things well be different , and all the natural disasters will be at and end.

I disagree with Jarrett about the external conflict. The external conflict is how the the world is affecting the person. In this case the moon plays a huge role because its causing all the disaster.

I was not all that satisfied with the ending of the book because I was expecting more action and excitement from the book. I had high hopes for a book about a catastrophic event that affected the whole world, I was expecting Miranda and her family to be less prepared and have more struggles than they actually did. As I was nearing the end I was still waiting for something more exciting but it never came. When the book ended I was actually suprised, I thought there was going to be a better ending but the book just seemed to end for me. The book was good but I was unhappy with the ending. I think this book was chosen as the recipient of the Gateway Book Award because it deals with a very popular topic, that being a apocalypse, that is in a lot of movies and books today. I think it was also chosen because it is a interesting book to read and the main character, Miranda, is around the age of most of the audience that would be reading this book.

This book was one of the most terrifying that I've ever read. You know what the one that is the MOST terrifying? That's right, it's companion: the dead and gone.
Do you know why it's so terrifying? Because this could actually happen!
I would probably die. I actually read the dead and gone first and I wanted to slam the book(and myself, and the author) against a wall so hard.
This book, however, gave us a resolution. I guess that's another thing that's bound to happen. That's the funny thing about humans: we bounce back. We're pretty hard to kill us off as a species. I'd say there's only two things that could kill humans: things from outer space(like in this book) and ourselves.
I also thought it was super cool because it showed HUMAN FLAWS.
Mom's aren't perfect, and they aren't always nice but they will work to keep us alive. They are also human and on instinct will try to keep the human race going. I was kind of really mad about the whole Johnny thing. I feel like my mum does that with my and my brother sometimes. Anyone with a sibling probably understands. But this is just out in the opening. It was still super unfair though. Why should the girl have to give her rations to the boys? Yes I know, 'a girl couldn't survive even if she made it' but seriously. I doubt her oldest brother would've accepted it anyways. Also Peter's death and my eyes vomiting tears like nooo whhhyyy. Then again: reality. He's working with the sick. He's going to get sick. She didn't sugar coat it.
